Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
The NMR frequency depends in large
part on the size of an externally applied magnetic field.
If the applied magnetic field is not uniform, then a
distribution of frequencies will be observed corresponding
to the different magnetic fields experienced by different
nuclei in the sample present. The more nuclei which are present
at a given location, the stronger will be the NMR
signal at the frequency determined by the magnetic
field which is present at that location. For MRI,
the magnetic field is made non-uniform in a very simple
way using magnetic field gradient coils. By analyzing
the resulting NMR signal, the distribution of the nuclei
can then be determined.
