Nanometer Sized Particles
Aluminum Particles
Below is a scanning electron microscope (SEM) picture of
nanoscale aluminum particles produced with inert gas
condensation. These particles are consolidated under
pressure to form a nanophase material. Since the particles
were passivated by exposure to air, they each have an
outer coating of aluminum oxide, about 4 nm thick. The
resulting nanophase material is a composite of Al metal and Al-oxide.
